Current research suggests we could be living a third of our lives in a hormonal decline.
Through a comprehensive consultation, I review how changes in your hormones have impacted your life.
I will work closely with you to devise a bespoke plan to help treat symptoms and restore hormonal balance.
Bioidentical Hormone Restoration Therapy uses hormones that have an identical chemical structure to the naturally occurring hormones which are produced by the body. Most bioidentical hormones are derived from diosgenin, (a substance found in Mexican wild yams) or from soy.
These differ from synthetic hormones and body identical hormones often used in standard HRT which have a different chemical structure.
These are a group of steroid hormones and function as the primary female sex hormone.
The three naturally occurring oestrogens are oestradiol, oestriol and oestrone.
A combination of oestradiol and oestriol is commonly referred to as Biest.
Oestrogens can help reduce hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings and vaginal dryness. Research has shown supplementation can help prevent osteoporosis, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
The primary function of this steroid hormone is to regulate the inner lining of the uterus and it plays an essential role in the reproductive cycle. Progesterone can be used to treat abnormal periods, improve energy, stamina, mood, sleep and protects the endometrium lining.
This hormone is a precursor to oestrogen and testosterone. It is the most abundant circulating hormone in both females and males. DHEA can increase energy levels, improve memory, enhance libido and alleviate symptoms of menopause.
This hormone is the parent hormone that plays a key role in the production of other steroid hormones including progesterone, DHEA, oestrogens and testosterone. It can be used to enhance and maintain good memory, to treat chronic fatigue, stress and exhaustion and alleviate menopausal symptoms.
Testosterone is a sex hormone and an anabolic steroid, considered to be a male hormone, however it is also essential for healthy hormone balance in women.
Low levels of teststerone can have a very dramatic effect on women's bodies. Balanced level of tetsosterone has been found to increase muscle mass and maintianing bone density. In addition to improving self-confidence levels, motivation and energy levels.
This hormone regulates sleep patterns. It may be used therapeutically to improve sleep and can also ease anxiety and lower blood pressure.
When your body is making too much or too little of some hormones or is unable to utilize hormones even tiny shifts in hormone levels can lead to big problems. Unbalanced hormones can include tender breasts, bloating, cramping, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, irritability and difficulty in concentrating.

Between the 1960’s and 1990s, HRT had established a reputation as the gold standard treatment for Menopause. Relieving symptoms such as hot flushes, decreased risk of osteoporosis and improved cardiovascular disease it was felt that the benefits of HRT greatly out weighting the risk.
Im 1993 a ‘Women’s Health Initiative Study’spread fear amongst menopausal women and the medical fraternity. The study followed the health of over 27,000 women undergoing HRT, the data began to reveal an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, cancer and stroke sparking huge media interest and causing doctors against prescribing HRT therapy.
Unfortunately in reality the study had many flaws, many of the women had pre-exisitng health conditions and not all types of hormones were studied, the HRT that was analysed used synthetic rather than bioidentical hormones.
Therefore the damage to the reputation of HRT was unjustified and discouraged from women getting the treatment they needed in order to improve their quality of life. Since then many studies have been conducted which show that there is no increased risks of disease with HRT use including breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Bioidentical hormones and body identical hormones are made with the same ‘ingredients’ – hormones extracted from natural sources that are identical in chemical and molecular structure to those occurring naturally in the human body – but there are differences between the two including the manufacturing process.
Body-identical hormones are produced by large pharmaceutical companies in a licenced set doses and application methods. This one-size-fits-all approach works for some patients, but body-identical hormones cannot be altered to cater to those with more specific needs.
The crucial aspect of bio-identical hormones is that they are prescribed for each individual person’s needs, everyone is unique. Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) uses processed hormones that come from plants, commonly prescribed hormones are oestradiol, oestriol, progesterone, pregnenolone and Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced by the body's adrenal glands.
Bioidentical hormones are produced by compounding pharmacies and specialist licence pharmacies that are regulated however bioidentical hormones are not licenced because it would not be feasible to conduct clinical trials on individual dosages.
At River View Clinic we prescribe bioidentical hormones, from pharmacies that have both compounding and specialist licenses. This means that pharmacies are able to prepare customised doses and application methods to address the individual needs of a patient, under regulatory processes, from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and a special license regulated (MHRA).
